Secretary-Treasurer Report for August 2020
by Scott A. Sullivan
August 17, 2020
I hope this report finds you and your family safe and healthy!
This report is being put together because of COVID-19 and the inability to conduct a regular General Membership meeting because of the Governor's order on crowd size.
I have asked all our business agents to put a report together so that we can post them on the website so that members can stay current on issues happening inside the Local.
As I’m putting this report together, I’ve just been notified that the Edmonds School District has just laid off 176 of our members who drive school buses. Jason Powell‘s report will go more in depth about issues that we have with school districts and our members' abilities to return to work safely!
City of Bellevue
The city approached the union about the ability to potentially not fund their self-insured health and welfare plan for up to three months because of the excess reserves in the fund and the City being $28 million short in general fund money. After a long discussion with all of our shop stewards covering three bargaining units and about 250 members, we reached a tentative deal. That deal would allow the city to not fund health and welfare for up to three months in 2020, and if they do, our members also would get a health and welfare holiday and not have to pay their monthly premium share. We were also able to secure for 2021 no increase into the health and welfare premium rates. Also for 2022 we got one month where the members would not have to pay their premium share.
So with that being said, it was a fully recommended MOU by all 3 bargaining committees and that vote will be counted on August 27th.
City of Kirkland
Contract for the City expires December 31 of 2020; we had bargaining scheduled for August 18 and the 25th. The city has just informed me that they’ve hired a new HR director and that they wish to cancel those two dates and instead meet September 1. Currently we have the surveys out to the membership to see what issues they would want us to address in bargaining.
Stay safe ,stay healthy, and wear that mask,
In solidarity,
Scott A.Sullivan
